Launching a Private Label Spirit: A Step-by-Step Operational Guide

Getting the sequence right in a private label spirits project saves time and money. From brief to first delivery — six steps that work in practice.

Launching a private label spirit requires navigating production, compliance, and logistics simultaneously. Getting the sequence wrong is expensive — a label compliance issue discovered after the first production run means reprinting or remarking an entire batch. Here is the sequence that works.

Step 1: Write a clear brief before approaching distilleries

The first conversation with a distillery should include your product category, target ABV, target price point, volume requirements, intended markets, and timeline. Vague briefs produce vague proposals. Invest one hour building a one-page brief before making any approach.

Step 2: Match the distillery to your specification

Not all distilleries can produce all spirit types to all quality tiers. Consider:

  • Spirit type — vodka, gin, whisky, and brandy each require different production facilities
  • Minimum order quantity — some distilleries require 1,000+ cases; others can work from 200
  • Geography — CZ/SK/AT/DE distilleries offer simpler under-bond logistics within the region

The Reserve maintains a network of vetted distillery partners across Central Europe.

Step 3: Finalise recipe and technical specification in writing

Once the production partner is confirmed, agree on the technical specification before any production begins:

  • Spirit character and sensory profile target
  • Ageing requirement (if applicable)
  • Bottling format: volume, closure type, label application method

Step 4: Clear label compliance before design goes to print

Do not print labels before compliance is confirmed. Check:

  • Legal category per Regulation (EC) 110/2008 Annex II
  • ABV declaration format and accuracy
  • Country-specific language requirements for each target market
  • Allergen declarations

Use the Label & Compliance Checklist for a market-specific requirements list before engaging a label designer.

Step 5: First production run and quality sign-off

Request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with each production batch covering ABV, methanol content, and sensory evaluation. Sign off on the batch before labelling commences — corrections at this stage are manageable; corrections after labelling are not.

Step 6: Organise logistics before first delivery

Plan inbound and outbound logistics in advance:

  • Inbound: under-bond movement from the distillery to your warehouse or bonded facility
  • Outbound: first delivery documentation — CMR, commercial invoice, excise accompaniment documents

Use the Route & Documents Planner for movement-specific documentation checklists.
