EU Spirits Labelling: Mandatory Label Elements

What information must appear on spirits labels sold in the EU market — a practical overview of mandatory elements under Regulation (EC) No 110/2008 and the 2021 amendment.

Correct labelling of spirits is one of the most common areas where producers and importers encounter problems when entering new markets. The Reserve has prepared an overview of key mandatory elements based on current European legislation.

Mandatory label elements for EU spirits

  1. Legal category — e.g. "Whisky", "Vodka", "Brandy" per Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 110/2008
  2. Alcoholic strength — in % volume, to ±0.3% accuracy, expressed as a numeral followed by "%vol"
  3. Trade name — optional, but must correspond to the legal definition
  4. Net volume — in ml or l
  5. Country of origin — mandatory for Geographical Indications (GI), recommended for others
  6. Allergens — mandatory sulphite warning (≥ 10 mg/l SO₂)
  7. Lot code — mandatory under Directive 2011/91/EU

Country-specific requirements

Beyond the EU baseline, some countries have additional requirements, e.g.:

  • CZ/SK: Label language must be Czech/Slovak, or a Czech/Slovak sticker must be attached
  • DE: Special rules apply for "Qualitätswein" and regional designations
